Moroccan Rugs 101: Beni M'guild

Beni M'guild rugs are traditionally handwoven by Berber women in the Western Middle Atlas mountains of Morocco. Thick and lush, these rugs are woven thick in pile to protect from the harsh cold of winter, often using colors like black, brown, aubergine, orange, blue and red.

Colorful and authentic, each rug has its own story to tell! Design characteristics range from free expressive patterns to tighter geometric shapes. They are particularly known for utilizing Indigo to create deep shades of blue and purple. Because of their vibrant colors, Beni Mguilds can seem intimidating at first. But even if you lean more towards neutrals in your home, these rugs can work lovely as accent or statement pieces!

They’re also often reversible. Because of the unique way they are hand-knotted, the underside of a Beni is typically flat woven. Showing off your rug’s reverse side in the warmer months of the year gives any room a whole other feel, while still showing off its amazing color and detail!
